I heard a story today about a coach who told his volleyball team that the tournament they were about to perform in was a “throw-away”. In other words, playing aggressively, making mistakes, going for it would not be penalized. Players would not be subbed out for taking chances and playing on the edge . The coach took a chance on his players by telling them to have fun. To ignore their fears, their apprehensions, and just have fun. Throughout the story amazing events and feats of athletic ability rose to the forefront from players whose previous apprehension had played a significant part in how they performed. The team reached the championship game because of the amazing performances witnessed throughout the day. The morale of the team was at a new peak. It was an astonishing display of excellence, courage, bolstered self-esteem, and dreams realized. The team won the tournament, setting their own records for fun, fulfillment, and team play.
