Voice of Halloween
The history of Halloween is recorded and searchable. Yet, it is much more fun to just enjoy the fun of it right? If it matters at all whether it was originally a pagan celebration, or that it glorifies ghouls and goblins, death and mascara , who cares? Living in the now, we enjoy the fun of masquerading as our favorite character for this year. Young or old, we are driven to the joy of this season s merriment and the onset of the wintry cold. Halloween (or All Hallow s Eve) is the eve of All Saint s Day. November 1st is the Roman feast of the heavenly saints recognized by the Catholic Church. It is followed by All Soul s Day on November 2nd. The Feast of All Souls is a day of commemoration of the faithfully departed, or the Day of the Dead. All cultures remember their dead either in tales, art, or ritual. Veteran s Day and Memorial Day are examples of the honoring of the dead in the USA. The Egyptian Book of the Dead is a scroll of rites for helping the deceased on their journey throug

I heard a story today about a coach who told his volleyball team that the tournament they were about to perform in was a “throw-away”. In other words, playing aggressively, making mistakes, going for it would not be penalized. Players would not be subbed out for taking chances and playing on the edge . The coach took a chance on his players by telling them to have fun. To ignore their fears, their apprehensions, and just have fun. Throughout the story amazing events and feats of athletic ability rose to the forefront from players whose previous apprehension had played a significant part in how they performed. The team reached the championship game because of the amazing performances witnessed throughout the day. The morale of the team was at a new peak. It was an astonishing display of excellence, courage, bolstered self-esteem, and dreams realized. The team won the tournament, setting their own records for fun, fulfillment, and team play. FEAR: False Evidence Appears Real…
In a 2011 article published in the Harvard Business Review, Peter Guber, former Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, tells the story of how he made the case to Loews theater group (owned by Sony) to build a 16 or 20 movie screen multiplex in the unlikely city of Manhattan, NY. At the time, movie theaters only had two or three screens at most. Change is a perfect cause for fear. Guber s proposal ignited emotional ideas of self-destruction and uncertainty. Yet, he didn t corral the unbridled emotions with facts and statistics. Guber used a simple statement of logic. Comparing the multiplex theater to a food court in a shopping mall, he pointed out that a hungry shopper would see the plethora of food options as a convenience if there first choice was sold out or crowded. His point being that movies can be consumed emotionally like food. The larger menu of movies at one location would encourage more consumption.
